Our little town rarely experiences public art happenings, but this past week a wonderful pop-up art installation quietly appeared around the village. “Inside Out” is an exciting project from the Philadelphia Museum of Art which aims to bring a taste of the museum to ten Philadelphia neighborhoods and suburban towns. From May until mid-November, sixty beautiful reproductions from PMA’s amazing collection will be on view. The museum has posted maps to guide viewers to the paintings and images of the art work right here.
One of my favorites from the show is a copy of Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase(No.2) which is displayed in front of the Newtown Theatre, the oldest continuously operated cinema in the North America.(see above)
I am curious to know why the museum chose to place J.M.W. Turner’s “The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons” in front of the town’s oldest bank; is it a hint.
On the other hand, placing Toulouse-Lautrec’s “At the Moulin Rouge” in front of the Green Parrot Tavern makes perfect sense. And the location of Edward Hick’s “Noah’s Ark” up the street from the artist’s former home is spot on.
